Microsize Powder Molykote and Dow Corning Lubricants, Silicon Adhesives and Sealants

Molykote Microsize Powder: A High-Performance Solid Lubricant

Molykote Microsize powder is a highly refined, purified Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) powder. It serves as a solid lubricant, renowned for its exceptional lubricating properties, particularly in demanding industrial applications and extreme environments.

Key Characteristics:

  • Composition: Primarily consists of Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2), typically with a purity of 98% or higher.

  • Appearance: A fine, black, free-flowing powder.

  • Particle Size: Characterized by its ''microsize'' particles, with typical values often indicating that 90% of particles are smaller than approximately 11.8 µm, and 50% are smaller than around 5.2 µm (though specific grades may vary).
  • Excellent Lubrication: Significantly reduces friction and wear between surfaces.
  • Extreme Pressure (EP) Resistance: Capable of withstanding very high loads.
  • Wide Service Temperature Range: Effective across a broad spectrum of temperatures, typically from -185°C to +450°C (-301°F to +842°F) in air, and even higher (up to +1100°C or +2012°F) in a vacuum or inert atmosphere.
  • Oxidation Resistance: Offers good resistance to oxidation, contributing to its performance at higher temperatures.
  • Good Adhesion: Can adhere well to metal surfaces.

Primary Applications:

Molykote Microsize powder is versatile and used in several ways:

  • Dry Burnished Film Lubrication: It can be rubbed directly onto metallic surfaces to create a dry, lubricating film. This is particularly useful where liquid lubricants are not suitable due to high loads, low speeds, extreme temperatures, or dusty environments.
  • Solid Lubricant Additive: It is frequently incorporated as an additive into self-lubricating plastics (like nylon or acetal) and sintered metal parts to enhance their frictional properties and wear resistance from within the material.
  • Additive in Metalworking Compounds: Used in formulations for metal forming and cutting fluids to improve tool life and surface finish.
  • Run-in Aid: Assists in the initial ''running-in'' period of new machinery components, helping to smooth mating surfaces and prevent galling.
  • Press-Fitting: Eases the assembly of press-fit components by reducing the required force and preventing seizure.
  • Heavy Load and Slow Speed Applications: Excels in lubricating components subjected to extreme loads and slow sliding speeds, where hydrodynamic lubrication is difficult to achieve.
  • Metal/Metal and Metal/Plastic Pairings: Effective for various material combinations.

In essence, Molykote Microsize powder provides a reliable lubrication solution for challenging conditions where conventional oils and greases might fail, helping to extend component life, reduce maintenance, and improve operational efficiency.
